Avant-dernières pensées (in English Thoughts-Before-Last, or Penultimate Thoughts) is a set of three piano short pieces written by Erik Satie in 1915. In this set (the last of his humoristic suites from the 1910’s), Satie continues his developments on short, semi-allegoric pieces with funny/absurd writings along the score. Someone familiar with his Enfantines could think of this set as “Enfantines for grown-ups”, as the music has a distinct ludic quality, but this time not trying to build simple, small-handed structures, and rather exploring a few “modern sounding” harmonies and techniques.
