about

Pièces Froides (in English Cold Pieces) is a collection of six works by Erik Satie, written in 1897, but only published in 1912. In his "Memoirs of an Amnesic", he wrote: "I used a kaleidophone-recorder to write my Pièces Froides. It took seven minutes". The collection is divided into two sets, with three piano pieces each:

The first set is called Airs à faire fuir (in English Tunes to make you run away). In this set, the first and third Airs revisit the minor and diminished sonorities of his Gnossiennes, but worked out to an enhanced level of complexity; while the second Air is a brilliant reworking of a 18th century Northumbrian folk tune called The Keel Row. The set establishes the tone for Satie’s future developments on musical irony, with playing indications such as “Don’t eat too much”, “Suck on it” and “Rock bottom”, referencing his own experiences of loneliness and deprivation due to his financial struggles.

The second set is called Danses de Travers (in English Crooked Dances). They build up textures and harmonies from a series of arpeggios, in a minimalistic way. Among the playing instructions, there are some funny remarks, such as “Out of the corner of your hand”, “Tell yourself” and “A little cooked”.

While composing these works, in the winter of 1897, Satie was living in Montmartre, in an apartment so cold and small he called it a "cupboard" – and yet he found the mood to come up with six interesting compositions. Today, that little apartment is a miniature museum dedicated to his memory: the Musée-Placard d'Erik Satie (Cupboard Museum of Erik Satie).
