about

Satie invented the word ‘gnossienne’ as a name for his new compositions, with no bar lines nor time signatures, indicating that the performer should take a fluid approach on time and rhythm. The name is probably a reference to Knossos, a big archeological site in Crete, discovered and excavated during Satie’s lifetime.

The first three pieces were published in 1893, as a unified set called Trois Gnossiennes, just like the Trois Gymnopédies from a few years earlier. The fourth to sixth, however, are posthumous findings and were not intended to be kept together as part of a single set, nor they were called ‘gnossiennes’ by Satie himself. They sound very different from each other – the fourth being dark and melancholic, while the fifth brighter and the sixth full of eyebrows and gloomy sarcasm. As for the seventh – this one called a ‘gnossienne’ by Satie himself –, it was part of a broader set of incidental music for Péladan's play 'Le Fils des Étoiles', labelled as “decorative music” for the first act – and to me it sounds like Satie was parodying himself.
