This set of Trois Gymnopédies is probably the best known work of Erik Satie, having found its way to popular culture decades ago. The name 'gymnopédie' is likely a reference to a Spartan festival called the Gymnopaedia, featuring naked dances performed by young men (the word comes from the Greek "gymnos", meaning "naked" or "unarmed", and "paedia", meaning "youth"). Since Satie often called himself a ‘gymnopedist’, it's interesting to listen to this set with that reference in mind.

Despite writing the set in 1888, Satie delayed, for unknown reasons, the publishing of the second gymnopédie until 1895. Debussy, who have later orchestrated the first and third ones, believed the second to be unfit for that type of arrangement. As for myself, I have easily recorded the others, but had a lot of trouble achieving a good enough interpretation of the second gymnopédie – as if, despite very similar to the others in structure, it was still resisting to be part of the trio.

PS: Despite generally associated with "relaxing vibes", these pieces strike me as sad and tense, and that's what I tried to capture with my slow interpretations.
