about

As a composer and a fan of Erik Satie’s work, I couldn’t help attempting my own gnossiennes and gymnopédies. My intention was not to "sound like Satie", but rather to explore, in a practical way, these concepts from my own point of view. As in both cases Satie was probably referring the Ancient Greek, I decided to work freely on that reference.

It's important to notice, though, that Satie would probably be against my iniciative, considering it some sort of imitation. In his text 'A Mammal's Notebooks', he wrote: "There is no school of Satie. Satisme could never exist. It would find me against it. (...) I have always made an effort to put followers off the scent, by both the form & the essentials of each new work. That is the only way for an artist to avoid becoming the head of a school, and therefore a swot."

Of course, I'm not trying to simply imitate Satie, but rather to learn about my own compositional preferences by exploring the potentials and limitations of an arbitrary model, just as one could do by composing fugues or sonatines – but still I suspect Satie would not be very pleased. In the end, my pieces came out more like a tribute to him than anything else.
