about

Originally written for a small orchestra and later reduced for piano, 'Les Pantins Dansent' (in English ‘The Puppets Dance’) is an experimental short piece written by Erik Satie in 1913. Commissioned by Valentine de Saint-Point as a “poème dansé” based on an homonymous poem of her own authorship, the piece was performed at the interdisciplinary Festival de la Métachorie, and danced by Saint-Point right after the declamation of her poem. This union of poetry, music and dance over "the same idea" was part of the Festival’s interdisciplinary argument for the unification of the arts.

We don’t know for sure if Satie was on board with these ideas or if he was just doing what he was paid for, since he never spoke publicly about the festival (although he has participated in some other interdisciplinary projects). But the ironic tone of 'Les Pantins Dansent', consistent with his other works from the same period, deeply contrasts with Saint-Point’s lugubrious poem, suggesting he found a way to imprint, in this commissioned work, some of his own style and ideas.
